  Web browser preference
Posted by: Darth-Apple - May 23rd, 2013 at 3:36 PM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (51)

I think many computer nerds are beyond thankful that internet explorer isn't the only option for web browsers out there. I personally use Firefox. What's your preference? Be sure to vote in the poll!

  Origin of your username

This is pretty self explanitory. Just share the origin of your username, why you chose it, etc...

I got the idea for mine from the coadmin of hardwiredgoogle.com, as he went by darth-android. Despite being a google fansite, I decided to join in and went by darth Apple. I've been using that username at many sites since.

What the origin of your username?

  Autism
Posted by: Gmdykfuiygh66476 - May 22nd, 2013 at 4:29 AM - Forum: Current Events - Replies (24)

According to autism-society.org, the prevalence of autism is 1/88.

Speaking as an aspie, it's quite a mild autism-spectrum disorder (very few, if any meltdowns - the ones that do occur don't last long and are mild, generally lessened symptoms), but it's still very difficult to live with. My primary concern with living with it is impaired social skills, which make communication quite difficult.  My main concern for others though is that a lot of young children are misdiagnosed. Another concern is people who are diagnosed too late in life, especially if they're young adults. It is very hard to get a diagnosis then.

There's no real cure for any ASD. But they can be greatly improved to the point where they aren't noticeable through extensive therapy.

What are your thoughts?

Any good suggestions on virtual machine software?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - May 22nd, 2013 at 4:02 AM - Forum: Technology & Hardware - Replies (4)

I personally love virtual machines, and find them extremely useful. I'm currently using virtualbox, but the screen resolution is very annoying with VB, so I was wondering if there was a good alternative that people have found to be good. Any suggestions?

Should governments subsidize the cell phone service?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - May 22nd, 2013 at 1:57 AM - Forum: Current Events - Replies (9)

Ten years ago, the idea that practically everyone above the age of 11 would have a cell phone was laughable, to say the least. Of course the use of the cell phone has become a very integral part of society since then, but the prices still have yet to reflect that.

Many people are still used to paying bills upwards of $120/month just to get unlimited 3G/4G service, and now LTE is beginning to take the spotlight. Such high prices are difficult for some, especially the unemployed, to afford. However, cell phone technology is very expensive by nature, so the service bills are naturally high as a result. The question becomes that of whether or not the government should begin to take steps to significantly subsidize such an essential service as technology continues to grow. Be sure to vote in the poll!

English class - love or hate?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - May 22nd, 2013 at 12:08 AM - Forum: Creative Writing - Replies (15)

English, much like math, is a very controversial subject for both high school and college students. While I'm not majoring in it, I personally love the subject. However, there are also plenty who are on the opposite end of the spectrum, so here we have a poll. Be sure to register your vote!

  Graphing calculators
Posted by: Darth-Apple - May 21st, 2013 at 11:52 PM - Forum: Technology & Hardware - Replies (5)

Pretty much every math class today lists "TI-83 or equivalent" as a list of required materials. Personally, I always felt $100 was a bit pricey for a graphing calculator, so for quite some years I've gotten away with a Casio fx-9750GII calculator instead. It doesn't have nearly as much memory, but it's actually much faster, and programming it has been quite interesting.

On the other hand, being the one guy in class shuffling through my manual's pages while everyone else is doing math wasn't my favorite experience with my cheap calculator, but if you can't afford the expensive ones, why pay for them?

I personally am a huge fan of programming graphing calculators. I almost finished programming minesweeper on mine, although there was one thing I never quite figured out. Any other calculator fanatics out in the community?
