  Cold showers
Posted by: Urban - November 30th, 2014 at 7:48 PM - Forum: Lifestyle - Replies (13)

I recently started taking cold showers for the health benefits and the nofap challenge. I have taken 5 1/2 so far. My first one was on easy mode where I turned the water to cold-ish at the end. Then after that is when I started going in very cold from the beginning. I noticed the several mental benefits after every one. I hope that it's a habit I never break. I have very little experience with them but so far they are great.

Can we have a discussion about cold showers?

How to use the Slice tool for web pages & elements

How to use the Slice tool for web pages & elements
In this tutorial, I am going to be outlining the process of slicing. What you will learn:
- How to slice elements you want.
- How to export your design in HTML.
- How to get element's working.

1. Design your website!
First of all, you need to create a design in photoshop. This can be a full web page or just some elements. I have chosen some elements I quickly designed earlier today.

2. Slicing your design.
Now, you need to slice your design into sections. I recommend slicing each different section, as this makes it much easier later on whilst editing.
The slice tool is found when you Right Click the crop tool.
To slice elements, simple drag the tool over the section you want, as if you were placing a shape.

Here is what my design looked like once I had sliced all my elements. http://speedcap.net/sharing/files/73/ad/...4736a4.png

3. Getting your design ready.
Once your design has been sliced, you need to get the code. To do this, goto: "File --> 'Save for Web'"
Check all the slices are correct. Choose a pre-set export, I would recommend  PNG-24 for the best quality.
Once you have correctly configured your export, it should look something along the lines of this: http://speedcap.net/sharing/files/64/4b/...d4e25d.png
Once done, click "Preview" - This will open a page on your internet browser with the exported design & the code you need to make this happen.
Check it looks correct, and move on.

4. Export it!
Back on photoshop, click "Save". You need to give it a name, then make sure the format say "HTML and Images", Create a new folder with any name, open it and click save again.
This will create a folder called images and create the HTML file, if you open the html document, you webpage is done!

Then go on to edit in the elements for your design!

Happy turkey day, everyone! If anyone wants to share, what are you thankful for today? (And, if you don't mention MS, my feelings will be eternally hurt. Tongue)

I'm, for one, thankful I will be eating ham instead of turkey tomorrow. Tongue

Planning to Start a Tech Forums/Site
Posted by: CapTon - November 26th, 2014 at 6:18 PM - Forum: Launchpad - Replies (8)

Hey guys Smile

So I have plans to start a technology-based forum site called TekPlace. The site would allow for discussion regarding the internet, computers, video games, or anything else relating to technology.

I plan to use IcyBoards for the time being. Right now, I'm at the stage of searching for that perfect theme. If you have a suggestion, please let me know, as I am struggling to find a good one.

I am also currently looking for people that are willing to be mods or admins on the site. I'm not going to make the same mistake I did with SimCityDefined (previous site I made), where I had no staff to help me with anything. If you want to join in on the fun, shoot me a PM or reply to this thread.

I'll post updates here with everything that you nee to know.

EDIT: My forum has been created for a certain version of MyBB 1.8, but when I download a theme designed for 1.8 and try to install it, it says the theme is not compatible with the version. I don't want to ignore compatibility because that typically makes the theme look bad when going back to the main site. If you have a solution, please let me know.

  Trying to "re"invent MyBB?
Posted by: Harry K. - November 26th, 2014 at 10:58 AM - Forum: Design Showcase - Replies (34)

A while back, after MyBB officially removed the old R/S/J section from the site I posted a thread that generated a lot of attention for theme designers. Take a look. Since this thread, I have had an idea in the back of my mind - however was never too sure on how to take the approach at starting something like this. Earlier this month, I decided to give it a try and started working on a project I have kept secret from the majority of people I speak too & see around the forums I visit.

Please note, I want feedback on the design and feel - not the idea.

Just to get things straight, I am not promising this will be released! I am purely trying this out and seeing how it goes, then I will decide if I want to release the website or not, after all it will come with many problems. I also want to remind you that the entire site is run by MyBB - Incredible software.

Anyway, to the point. The design is swaying further and further away from the basic MyBB style that most themes have(Like this one! Wink ) I almost feel like I'm reinventing MyBB

Some playing around with Photoshop

I hate having to register for things.
Posted by: Harry K. - November 26th, 2014 at 10:01 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (17)

I am a lazy person, therefore will avoid things I don't necessarily have to do, such as registering! Especially with MyBB.

Oh, anyway what's up guys? My name is Harry, some of you will probably know me from IcyBoards, and a few other places, I enjoy doing Web & Graphic Design in my free time and lurking forums to keep up in the know. I have used MyBB for a long time and have come to grasp the in's and out's of the amazingly simple but confusing software. Tongue

Anyway, to explain what I said above my introduction, I absolutely hate registering for things, It means 5 minutes out of my life that I could have spent elsewhere doing something productive, like annoying my twitter followers. <- Those poor people. It's purely because I'm lazy, I can't bare to think of what I would miss whilst doing such a task. No I am only joking, it's not that hard, however I always think using social service logins is a good approach to usability and expanding a member base. @Darth Apple, take a look into that maybe? No? Ok.

Anyway I'm out, peace.

  Reading music - a necessity?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - November 26th, 2014 at 6:09 AM - Forum: Media & Entertainment - Replies (2)

There have no doubt been many good musicians that don't know how to read music, and yet many music teachers and instructors today focus on it first and foremost. Personally, I have learned several musical instruments, but never had the patience to learn to read the music. (Yes, I can read chord charts. The rest is stuff I do by ear. )

I think that part of the reason behind that is because the best way to teach someone is to give them the resources to learn on their own, and the easiest way to do that is to teach people how to read music. However, many great musicians skip the process of learning how to read music and jump straight into learning the instrument.

What is your opinion? Do you know how to read music? Do you find it to be an essential skill for any musician to have?

[MyBB Plugin] Latest Visitors on Profiles (for 1.8)
Posted by: Darth-Apple - November 25th, 2014 at 6:21 PM - Forum: MyBB Related - Replies (9)

Over the past couple of months, I've been working on and off on a little plugin to count and to log visits to user profiles. It's installed here, so if you want to check it out, feel free. Tongue

Anyway, the plugin has a number of features, including:

  • An optional profile visits counter
  • A popup modal box that displays the latest visitors on profiles
  • Visitor caching to prevent a single user from rapidly reloading the page to bump their profile visits counter.
  • Usergroup based permissions
  • Basic moderator actions (allowing you to reset the counter or to delete visits)
  • MyBB 1.8 compatible.
This plugin is pretty much up in its final beta. I'm unaware of any remaining issues, so it will likely be released this week on the MyBB mod site. In the meantime, if anyone is interested in helping test it, you can download the beta via the github link. If you notice any issues, please do report them. Tongue
