Planning to Start a Tech Forums/Site - CapTon - November 26th, 2014

Hey guys Smile

So I have plans to start a technology-based forum site called TekPlace. The site would allow for discussion regarding the internet, computers, video games, or anything else relating to technology.

I plan to use IcyBoards for the time being. Right now, I'm at the stage of searching for that perfect theme. If you have a suggestion, please let me know, as I am struggling to find a good one.

I am also currently looking for people that are willing to be mods or admins on the site. I'm not going to make the same mistake I did with SimCityDefined (previous site I made), where I had no staff to help me with anything. If you want to join in on the fun, shoot me a PM or reply to this thread.

I'll post updates here with everything that you nee to know.

EDIT: My forum has been created for a certain version of MyBB 1.8, but when I download a theme designed for 1.8 and try to install it, it says the theme is not compatible with the version. I don't want to ignore compatibility because that typically makes the theme look bad when going back to the main site. If you have a solution, please let me know.

I like the idea, and would be willing to join once it's released. I think a more modernized name might help a bit. Besides that, the main advice I'd give is to make sure you have something about your forum that makes it unique, or at least interesting to join. As someone who runs a forum in a crowded niche myself, I can say that's a very important aspect. Tongue

As for ignoring theme compatibility, MyBB assumes a 1.8.2 theme is not compatible with 1.8.3. It will work just fine. The only time you will have issues is if you're trying to import a 1.6.* theme to 1.8. Tongue

Looking forward to seeing it released. Smile

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum Tongue.

I'm glad you'd be willing to join in on the bandwagon. I did thing the name was kinda... bad, but it was all I could come up with. I'll change it once I get this theme thing sorted out.

Ah Smile well, I've tried installing some 1.8 themes, and all of them look completely screwed up on the site. Icons missing, certain things out of place, etc.

Ah, I see. What theme did you attempt to install? Sometimes uploading the images is a little tricky. Did you follow the 1.8 resource upload tutorial? (Yes, they now have FTP access. Pretty cool, eh? )

I tried to install MyTrade. I haven't tried uploading any images yet, which may be why those icons aren't appearing. I'm looking at that tutorial now as well. Seems a bit complex, but I might be able to handle it Smile.

Generally (from what I remember) that would likely be the reason. I'm not familiar with MyBB/Icyboards 1.8 so I can't say for sure but take it slow in that respect. It can be a bit of a tedious process getting the images to work but as I'm sure you know the end-product is usually worth it. Smile

Just to let you know, as you are using IcyBoards, in the process of looking for a theme, make sure all the theme images and css images point to the images/theme/ folder or it will look broken.

Yeah Smile will do. I've been looking at some threads on the IcyBoards community forums to learn a few things, so hopefully I'll be able to perfect the site.
