  Apache or Nginx?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - April 18th, 2020 at 12:23 AM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (6)

Here's a poll for the server admins out there.

  • Apache is good for compatibility. It is the most widely used web server in the world. It is installed on the vast majority of web hosts, and is the only web server software that is natively compatible with .htaccess files that are widely used by most PHP applications.
  • Nginx is FAR faster than Apache. The perforamance improvements are significant. Most corporate or large websites do extra work to convert their .htaccess files to nginx configurations to take advantage of Nginx's performance.

Personally, I use nginx. Apache is good for compatibility, but is an absolute RAM hog in comparison. I've hosted an entire chat room host with about ~600 chat rooms (about 40 of which were active) on a tiny 512 MB VPS thanks to nginx. Makestation is also hosted on Nginx.

It's a very noticeable improvement when RAM is an issue. .htaccess files (used mostly for SEO friendly URLs) don't work out of the box, however. These have to be manually converted to nginx configurations to enable good SEO.

Which do you prefer? Nginx for speed, or Apache for compatibility?

How many People do you Live with?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - April 17th, 2020 at 11:24 AM - Forum: Lifestyle - Replies (7)

Three here. Two roomates, and the girlfriends usually stay here as well. We usually have about five people staying under one roof. It’s a small apartment so it can get a little crowded sometimes, but we do well and like it.

How many people do you live with?

Audi MMI Plus (Multi Media Interface)
Posted by: tc4me - April 16th, 2020 at 5:46 AM - Forum: Software - No Replies

Good morning folks, ask a quick question, has one or more of you ever dealt with Audi's MMI or MMI Plus? Why I ask, I have now installed additional software (Carplay) including keys on my Audi S6, via Teamviewer Putty with Lan to Usb, I also needed my repair software (VCDS and VCP and suitable dongle) from the seller, then via Teamviewer has adjusted the parameters. Why I post it here, you are all good programmers and the guy who installed it made good money (150 €) at Audi / Vw / Porsche it would have cost 350-500 euros.

  Suggestions for [Simmania]
Posted by: Darth-Apple - April 16th, 2020 at 3:10 AM - Forum: Simmania - Replies (2)

Have ideas, feedback, or suggestions for the SM-Tribute section? Share them here!

This section is in honor of a community that was an inspiration beyond words. It was so much more, and was the foundation for which we were built. Simmania is unfortunately no longer with us, but we've been growing this section as much as possible to try and pay our honors. It's a tribute to a community that will never be forgoten. Smile

Anyway, it's clear that we have quite a few Cities:Skylines players here. We will add some boards for this section once it grows a little more (probably once it reaches 1K posts). We've already got it at the very top of the forum (along with our special city journals section), so we've done a lot to try to expand this. Many thanks to everyone who has made this possible!

Anyway, we are open to all suggestions here. This section is a high priority, so we will work hard to grow it. In fact, in recent months, we've nearly doubled the content here (and it shows no signs of stopping). Finna Big Grin

Please shoot your ideas our way! Makestation needs them! @brian51

  Would you Recommend DigitalOcean?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - April 15th, 2020 at 9:31 PM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (7)

DigitalOcean is a fairly large provider/host that offers virtual servers (virtual machines on a rack server) for good prices. You get much more resources and better scalability than you do on shared hosting. On shared hosting, once your website gets busy, they email you and ask you to upgrade, or they suspend you. On VPS hosting, you generally get much more resources allotted to you, and if you run out, you'll know exactly where the limit is and can upgrade long before that happens.

It's generally much more flexible, powerful, and scalable.

Anyway, I've always used Ramnode. They're awesome and have great prices and reliability, but they have some vague CPU usage policies that are a little limiting and intimidating. In short, using more than one core (even if you bought four) is considered "abuse" unless it's for short bursts. Nobody is really sure if a "burst" is one hour, or an evening. I've never once run into an issue with Ramnode, but as we grow, I'm a little concerned about how vague the policy is.

DigitalOcean doesn't seem to do that, or at least is much more specific about it. I already have a new server for MS that is in the process of being set up (on Ramnode), but I saw some good ones on DigitalOcean and I've been considering it. Anyone have experience with them?

  Help a fellow forum out.

it's the final round of a battle of websites over at forum promotion and a forum called meowsepad is tied for first place.  Unfortunately some sour grapes are heckling both the community and the owner and their website/forum.  If anyone is a member there and has enough posts to participate I'd really appreciate it if you could vote for meowsepad.  They're a community much like our own and could use our help!

  Stimulus
Posted by: Darth-Apple - April 15th, 2020 at 11:37 AM - Forum: Current Events - Replies (3)

I just got mine. Much needed. I’m going to use it towards paying my final semester. A lot of folks in my generation aren’t getting a stimulus, but I’m lucky. I file my own taxes. Keeps me on the roll. Finna

You guys get yours yet?

The MotoGP class is the highest racing class within the FIM Motorcycle World Championship in street racing. It is also known as the premier class of motorcycle racing. For the 2002 season, the MotoGP replaced the 500 cc class that had existed since 1949 as the highest category in the Motorcycle World Championship.

  VPS/Server Setup Service
Posted by: Darth-Apple - April 14th, 2020 at 9:34 PM - Forum: Marketplace & Collaboration - Replies (5)

Hello all,

We set up servers!

Hard times have hit me these past few months. The Coronavirus is looming for us all, and I'm a university student working as much as possible to make ends meet. To to help make the difference on monthly bills, I'm opening up my experience to all! I'll set up a server for you at a low-cost rate. Big Grin

I have years of experience setting up servers on Nginx, MySQL, PHP, and Ubuntu. I have experience doing these both in for corporate and for personal use. I am well versed in Nginx rewrite rules, Apache based setups, MyBB-specific needs, and Wordpress-specific needs. In general, I have set up dozens of servers and can fine tune a server specifically for what you need. Smile

I will also install the application of your choice (MyBB, phpBB, Wordpress, Drupal, etc), along with Filezilla access and phpmyadmin for easy database management. Your server will be completed with a ready-to-use application installed. Any specific requests can be discussed as well.

Cost:
The cost to you will be $35 for the first server, and $20/server for every server thereafter.

To Sign Up: Send me a private message! I will respond to all requests within 12 hours, and will complete them within 24-72 hours. Happy to help in any way that I can. Any and all business is extremely helpful to me (and much appreciated). It helps keep the lights on in my apartment! Smile

Happy administration, and best of luck to all
-Darth
