  2020 WWDC

Haha Apple Silicon. Their press release doesn't even mention ARM.

OS 11 looks just like iPad.

That Shadow of the Tomb Raider gameplay they ran during the presentation looked like it was running in 1080p.

It baffles me that Apple is going all in on Metal instead of going with Vulkan like literally everyone else.

Brick GitHub Free

Anyone taken advantage of GitHub's new unlimited free private repositories yet?

I was using Bitbucket as most of my projects are just me but this is a game-changer. I know I'm a bit late but thought I'd mention in case anyone's not heard!

  Apple rejects Email App “Hey”
Posted by: Darth-Apple - June 20th, 2020 at 8:51 PM - Forum: Current Events - Replies (4)

Apple is pretty much being accused of anti-competitive practices once again. This time, they rejected an email application for not allowing users to sign up for their $99 annual email service from within the app. This is completely understandable for the app developer because Apple charges a 30% fee for in app purchases. It’s a bit of a steep price to pay.

What’s concerning is that Apple has made exceptions in the past, but they failed to do so here. I understand their desire to profit from in app purchases, but users of “hey” aren’t signing up for app features. They are signing up for an email account that has nothing to do with Apple, and the app is simply a client. It seems a bit greedy on Apple’s part.

What are your thoughts?

  Modernizing My Internet Life
Posted by: Thomas - June 19th, 2020 at 6:36 PM - Forum: Technology & Hardware - Replies (2)

Over the past month or so I've done a lot of "modernizing" stuff I've been too lazy to take care of over the past few years.

My website is now reactive (at least more than it was before) and uses https. I'm updating my blog more as well.

My personal email to my domain was always configured kinda weirdly. My domain is owned through Godaddy but my site is hosted by Mediatemple, and my DNS zones were pretty convoluted. I've got my CNAME back on Godaddy and my email is now going through the Outlook web client (my primary way of accessing my email), so no more dealing with POP or any kind of delay in sending or receiving emails.

I'm desperately trying to stop using Facebook but unfortunately Messenger is a primary way of contacting my friends so I can only deactivate my account rather than delete.

I'm also trying to decentralize my online presence from Microsoft services. When I owned my Windows Phone and was using my Surface a lot more I got pretty ingrained into their stuff. Right now I'm paying $10 a month for Microsoft 365. At some point I'd like to build a second computer as a server and run Nextcloud on it, but then I'd be at the mercy of my home internet reliability and keeping it secure and up to date myself. I'd also have to get my Plex server running on it. Right now when I switch over to Windows my Plex server goes down and all my torrents stop seeding. If I had a second computer to host all that stuff I wouldn't have any issues. I'd also get a ZNC set up on it so I wouldn't have to pay monthly for IRCCloud.

The password breach here has forced me to rely more on Lastpass and stop using one password for everything. This is something I should have done long ago though. So thanks I guess? Also please use https here.

  Mastodon
Posted by: Thomas - June 19th, 2020 at 4:04 AM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (4)

Mastodon is a federated Twitter-like social network. It's decentralized, so bascially there are different "servers" (instances), but they all talk to one another and you can follow users from different instances. Very unique concept and I'm enjoying it so far!
I'm here on this one https://hostux.social/@thomasboxley
There's more information on it here https://joinmastodon.org/

  Red Dead Redemption II
Posted by: Guardian - June 18th, 2020 at 1:50 PM - Forum: Other Games - Replies (11)

I've finally bought this game on sale. Only about 2 hours into it... and HOLY COW is this game SLOW.

I thought it would have been much better, even this early in, because of the accolades. The hype is the only reasons I haven't put the controller down and walked away yet. I've wanted to a couple of times already.

Anyone else play this game? Thoughts?

Best software to learn a language?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - June 18th, 2020 at 1:00 AM - Forum: College Board - Replies (6)

I'm in Spanish now. And it's not that it's terribly hard, but the software I'm using is awful. We're using VHL, and it takes hours to do something that should take 30 minutes to learn. I'd rather just learn it on my own, take the tests, and be done. Finna

I've used Duolingo before and it was good, but it was also somewhat basic compared to the subject material I'm learning now. Rosetta stone is expensive but I hear good things.

What's good? Anything anyone would be able to recommend?
