Hello, I just registered on your Makestation community! 

BotScout for MyBB is quite effective against the armies of spambots we normally have to suffer. It silently makes a call to check their database of well known bad actors. Although the code does not provide for automatic IP bans, it just blocks registration.

And as far as a I know, it does use a lot of hosting resources.
