Is online video making a form of art?

#1
YouTube has exploded in the past few years with thousands of content creators who make all sort of creative videos that sometimes tend to reach hollywood-quality...

Do you consider online video making a form of art? Can it be included in the same branch as cinematography?

I would agree, the market has definitely expanded significantly over the past few years. I've considered going into the field as well, but the lack of good equipment/software and time has made it difficult for me. I'd like to get a decent PC at some point and give it a shot again sometime.

There's no doubt that videos on youtube are a form of art. But I've heard from people that love traditional film photography that digital photography shouldn't be considered art because they're just binary numbers. How are binary numbers art?

Of course, art to me is an experience that requires us to connect using our senses, so whether the palette contains blob of paint or a bunch of 0's and 1's, whether music is coming off of a vinyl or an iPod, it's all art to me. So to me, digital videos on youtube is definitely art, and I think it's been a great tool in empowering people all around the world.

Well said. I do think that non-digital forms of art are always very valuable, but there is no reason that digital art does not qualify as art. Digital art is probably going to become increasingly popular as technology continues to advance in any case.

It's just like running a TV Show, just a slightly different audience.

I actually very much prefer the youtube channel atmosphere over the television atmosphere. Most channel owners have much more control over their content, so it always feels more original.

I don't see why it wouldn't be.

Whether any particular video is itself *good* art might be open to question, and of course not every video is intended as art. But the same could be said of photography, digital or otherwise.

Yes, I am sure online video can be an art. As in all art there will always be amateur attempts as well as truly creative works.

A simple talking head, or a practical demonstration is not going to viewed as a form of art. Creative use of video will shows different viewpoints or have a narrative element in what is filmed. It will use different types of software or animation to produce something that is amazing to view and forms a memorable impression.

It takes creativity to create something unique, which is major challenge for that sort of a niche.

Most of them, no. Some of them, absolutely.

Depends on the video and the actual effort that went into it. Was it creative?

ok where do you think the line is drawn?

Let's plays could be argued to straddle that line for example depending on, like you said, effort and if it's creative or not.

but at the same time I'd say animations and such fall firmly into the art catagory.

I would say so. But, just like any art, it really is all up to the viewer.

Some paintings would not be called art to some. It really all depends.
