How often do you back up your database?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - March 27th, 2020 at 2:40 AM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (5)

For us, we've only ever needed to use a database backup twice in our history, but you can never be too safe. Even losing a week's worth of content would be disappointing. I used to do monthly backups, but I now do them pretty much twice a week. File backups are usually once every six months (they don't change very much at all).

How often is pretty much acceptable to do a database backup? Have you ever had to use one before? Curious as to what other site owners and administrators use as their general schedule for these.

  How do you handle stress?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - March 26th, 2020 at 2:52 PM - Forum: Lifestyle - Replies (12)

My life has gotten increasingly stressful these past couple of years. I completed a two year program of College at my nearby Community College several years back. Took a couple years off, saved up as much money as possible, and went back. After changing my major, along with the hurricane (and now the coronavirus), my studies have dragged on longer than I expected. Savings ran dry paying for semester after semester, and now I'm working two jobs (and a third super-part time) and in school full time to try to get it finished off.

Communities like this one (and a number of other forums) are a stress-reliever of sorts for me. Outside of that, I try to stay in good shape physically, do my best to eat well, have a consistent schedule throughout the day, and try various supplements (L-theanine, CBD oil, and so forth) to help reduce the stress. In any case, you get used to it after a while. I know that there are people here who have much more stress in their lives than I do here. You learn and roll with it after a while.

And of course, as you get older, it only gets worse! Finna Tongue

How do you manage stress in your life?

Hi guys!

I'm Kyng, otherwise known as CJ. I'm 29 years old, I'm from the United Kingdom, and I work as a software developer. My hobbies include railways, sports (especially Formula One), gaming (especially strategy games), and - of course - forumming!

This looked like a nice place, so I thought I'd check it out Big Grin .

  Notifications
Posted by: Darth-Apple - March 25th, 2020 at 10:13 PM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (3)

We have a new feature here on the forums for handling notifications, thread subscriptions, etc (thanks to MyAlerts). The alerts will be on the toolbar on the top-right of any page. They can handle:

  • When your post is quoted
  • New replies on a thread you're subscribed to
  • Someone replies on a thread you created
  • Someone gives you a +rep
  • Someone rates your thread
  • Buddy requests and PMs

Currently, the statusfeed will still use the old native PM-style alerts. This is so that we can properly test them in order to prepare the plugin for its release. Full integration with our new alerts manager (myalerts) will be coming in May (along with some fixes to the "thanks" button and integration with those too). These can also be disabled in your user control panel or configured as you please. Smile

And as always, any bug reports or issues can be posted here!

  SSD dying after 40,000 hours
Posted by: Darth-Apple - March 25th, 2020 at 9:28 PM - Forum: Technology & Hardware - Replies (11)

Just read this today. A firmware bug in certain SSD models from HPE will cause them to irrecoverably crash after exactly 40,000 hours (4.5 years) of operation. The data can not be recovered after this happens.

Crazy enough, this isn’t even the first time this has happened with them. I would understand it if it were 65K or some other power of 2, but it’s not.

  My Custom phpBB Theme
Posted by: MofaMF - March 25th, 2020 at 6:36 PM - Forum: Design Showcase - Replies (10)

Hi MS!

Been playing around with a new phpBB forum (I also own a few forums running myBB, so please don't hate me!)

It's meant to be an old-school gaming looking forum, that many of us participated in a long time ago. Still some things to sort out here and there but it's coming together now.

Please take a look at https://gvforums.net/forums/ and let me know what you think - any suggestions would be great!

Thank you Smile

  Spambot "Harvester Killer"
Posted by: Darth-Apple - March 25th, 2020 at 12:19 AM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (10)

I saw this today. It's honestly a very neat idea. It basically traps spambots into an infinite loop of reloading the page to fill their database with bogus email addresses. Assuming it works (and xrumer isn't configured to not point to this website anymore), it's a genius idea.

As such, I've put a link to it here. Anyone heard of this (or this idea) before?
