Aco's Mapping

#1
Now that I have tons of free time due to my surgery recover, I've spent a lot more time in GIMP mapping. My first project is a map based off a certain Paradox mega campaign in 1936 (as you can see, only a small bit of the world is finished, that being all of Iberia and some of Western Europe):

I'll keep you guys updated as I make more progress! Big Grin

Looks neat. What is the actual process for developing maps in GIMP? Do you start with an imported outline to start with? (I'm assuming pixel by pixel is an extraordinarily difficult task from scratch. Tongue )

Yeah, I get my base maps from the Alternatehistory.com discussion forum. The Maps and Graphics section is a good place to start, and also the wiki is a good resource. And of course, you can find the color schemes I use for the maps on the wiki (I'm using the TACOS color scheme, try guessing what that stands for Big Grin)

LOL you're making me hungry... Tongue

So I guess it's just a matter of finding the right templates, then filling in labels, colors, etc?

Yeah, don't forget the most important part, changing the borders to suit the particular scenario you want. That is the most precise part IMO. (I'm far from a master at that Tongue)

Also, a new revision! (I'll call this: Poor Balkans, so close to Italy, so far from Color!)

Not exactly mapping... but I did a flag for Russia in my EU4 AAR using inkscape recently:

It's closely based upon the flag of Tsarist Russia (as featured here) in real life, but with a bear in the canton instead of the eagle.

Nice! I like its simplicity and the color choices. Big Grin

I did a slight change to the above flag. I made a few changes to the canton, expanding it down a bit and changing the yellow to match the one of the IRL Russian Empire's flag.

More flag stuff. I made a flag/CoA representing the Duchy of Swabia in Germany.

The checkerboard pattern on the left half represents the coat of arms of the Hohenzollern dynasty. On the right, a lion and an eagle on an azure (heraldicese for blue) field, because no European heraldry is complete without them Tongue
