That is a good suggestion. A live chat has been considered, but so far it has been difficult to find a solution that would be worthwhile, and that wouldn't overload the server.
I should be able to get our old "shoutbox" working again for the next theme update that's coming in a few days though. As long as there aren't any new unexpected technical difficulties, we should have no issues bringing it back.
