We've considered switching to phpBB many times over the past several years. We pretty much take a serious look at it every year and re-assess. The consensus this past March was pretty much to stick with MyBB for another year. Everyone pretty much decided that it still works better than any of the alternatives for us right now, but we will re-assess fairly soon and get an idea of where things stand in the next several months with MyBB 1.9 and otherwise.
We've considered some pretty far-fetched ideas also, such as using Wordpress for the entire website and using extensions to build upon it. We did a test website for the idea a few months back and it worked out much better than I had anticipated. There are some decent forum options and various community extensions for Wordpress, so it's definitely something we have looked into. IP.Board is another one we've considered. Believe me, pretty much nothing is off limits except for vBulletin.
We are very much open to suggestions from the community as well!
