Should the internet be government controlled and free to use? - Gmdykfuiygh66476 - June 23rd, 2013

Some people believe that ISPs should be publicized and the internet should be free for everyone to use.
I wouldn't mind this, as long as government isn't irresponsible with it. Irresponsible being laws like SOPA (what would have been.) Either way, free to use internet is something I would personally love. Depending on what speed you want from your government you may pay slightly higher, but this would go on your taxes.

What are your thoughts?

edit: move to debates please...

Personally, I think that there is some benefit to restrictions (it prevents piracy for example), but the government hasn't exactly done a good job with their plans of preventing those sorts of things. I feel like ISPs being controlled by the government would thus hurt a lot more than it would help, but that's just my opinion on the matter.

Also, thread = moved. Smile

Well, I do think 'free' internet would be great. But government controlled internet could also mean bad things (NSA now has direct access, RIAA can lobby even more). So I don't think it would do much good, other than being cheap.
