Your predictions: Ten years from now
Posted by: Darth-Apple - February 29th, 2020 at 2:41 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

I'm gonna go on a wild one here, and try and see what the general consensus is for what the world will be like ten years from now. It will be interesting to see how our predictions stack up. Try to be realistic. Nobody thought the cell phone/iPhone would have taken off the way that it did. Finna

My prediction is that laptops and tablets will evolve considerably. We already use tablets extensively, but their use will outpace actual laptops and computers. We will be carrying around super thin devices (thinner than what we have now) that are running operating systems advanced enough to do graphics design, audio work, development and programming, etc.

Windows will make another big flop after Windows 10, and once again try to get involved in the mobile sector. 10 years from now, they will have failed, and likely will be focusing on Cloud hosting and services as their main source of revenue.

I also think cars will go back to slightly more classic look (much like websites started using square borders instead of rounded corners again). The interiors will be very nice. The exteriors will be (slightly) more boxy once again. But who knows on this one... Who knows. Finna

What are your predictions? Who knows. Ten years from now, we will probably look back on this thread and see how it all stacked up.

Background, not really needed and slightly NSFW in the sense it involves drugs.

Quote:So I took an unknown pill after lots of testing and acetone washing to try and figure out what the substance was. Didn't have a Marquis test kit on hand, only Ehrlich and Ehrlich only tests for an indole group which you may find in LSD, DMT, regular Serotonin, or Melatonin, a common over-the-counter sleep aid.

My conclusion was that it was either:
1. MDMA
2. Amphetamine
3. Methamphetamine.

I won't disclose which one it was, but it looked like an E404 without the actual lettering imprint, just the cross on one side, so probably a press of something being sold as Adderall IR to students. Needless to say, a study aid would be nice today for me to finish up some Chemistry homework and assignments because I have a midterm coming up on Monday.

So now that it's kicked in, although I don't feel any real physical mental effects, I decided to run some 'benchmarks' on myself with the help of TypeRacer and HumanBenchmark.

Try the tests here:
https://www.humanbenchmark.com/tests/reactiontime
https://play.typeracer.com/

Results:
Reaction time:
(I was getting approx. 180-185 earlier when I ran some tests with a friend.)

Typing speed:
For reference, the average adult typing speed is 41WPM, and I also tested this with the friend who's not the absolutely most tech-savvy guy, but he got dead on 40WPM. Checks out.
Also note: I don't regularly touch type while staring at the screen, I look at the keyboard (but still type with 8 fingers) so I actually managed to watch the screen this time.

I do these somewhat regularly, so I already have approximate control variables to test against:
  • My average reaction time is around 210 to 220ms which is slightly above average. I used to be quite the gamer back in the day, CSGO and the likes.
  • My average typing speed sits somewhere between 70-75WPM, which is still considerably above average but nothing compared to what I was getting now.

Post results.

For those of us who stay busy, how do you manage your schedule? I know some people who manage to work 55+ hours a week, and are in school full time. Never quite understood how they did it... Finna

For me, it's planning everything well in advanced. I'm very rigid with my schedule, and that helps a lot. How do you find yourself managing your time when things get busy?

Might be a kinda weird art style, and unfortunately it's a Flash app, but it's pretty fun and is rather extensive with customization.
So instead of posting a photo of yourself because that's weird, make a photo of yourself using the assets.
Or go full fantasy if you really want, but mine's somewhat accurate to what I look like (minus the hair because although it does flange outwards at the bottom and my hair is pretty long, it's also a lot more straight than these portrayals as round.

My coats are also a lot darker than the 'black' here.

[Not entirely related to 'creative' writing, per se, but related to literature so I guess it falls hand-in-hand.]

What's your take on the whole popular science genre?

I've got pretty mixed feelings about it in general, but I do enjoy the genre for some light reading that might actually teach me something without bending my brain too much.
At the same time, that's also why I have mixed feelings about it haha.

So, I was pretty unaware of the genre at all until first year of uni, when my roommate (studying Civil Engineering) picked up a copy of Tyson's new book at the time, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry. When one of my friends was over and my roommate was reading, he asked 'hey, what's that book about?' And the only suitable response was "Astrophysics, but for people in a hurry."

Now, I've never read that book in particular, and my roommate at the time was studying engineering, so at least it was somewhat related to what he was studying, and I guess by those standards you could call it 'complementary/supplementary reading' in his case. And the guy was really smart, got higher-than-average grades in all his classes, despite always doing a bong rip before any sort of studying.

But every now and then, I go out to some social gathering (a bar with some friends and friends of friends, or maybe an open-house at a company) and someone starts to open their mouth and talk about quantum mechanics or some subject that they only know about on the very surface, seemingly to make themselves look smart within the group, but if you ask them a question that goes any deeper than a pop-sci book, they completely freeze up, or give you an explanation of something that isn't what you asked about, but contains the same words (strawman-ing to get out of it.)

Like, yeah, I'm a bit of an a** when it comes to that, because I do read a lot (like, way too much, if I'm not studying or playing vidya, I'm reading, whether it be some online journals, articles, or a book of some sort.) If I come across an interesting subject, I really want to go deep into it and do my research on the subject so I can understand it even better, and then I think about the implications of that subject on another subject (occasional psychedelic use also helps me with this haha.) And I get not everyone is like me in that sense, people truly are In a Hurry and can't afford the time to read over other stuff to broaden their horizons, at least to a basic degree of understanding.

I mean, hell, I write academic papers for beer money too (okay, maybe not just beer, as that would mean I'm a complete alcoholic) so I need to research all subjects and find sources on JSTOR or whatever and interpret them to the point where I can use them in an argumentative essay.

But when people try to use all that basic theory to try and prop themselves up socially, that kinda grinds my gears. And that also stems from YouTube videos on the subject.
Numberphile is notorious for that as well, with their sum(1+2..infinity) = -1/12 video which got incredibly popular because of its controversy. It's certainly an interesting watch, but if you have any education with high-school math and divergent vs. covergent functions, you'd find the error immediately when he approximates sum(1+0+1+0+1+[...]) to 0.5. Mathologer made an excellent video explaining why it's wrong, but still an interesting theory. And occasionally people will try to give you 'fun trivia' on why that's true, when in reality it really isn't.

Like, yeah, I'm familiar with certain theories and concepts already, but I don't try to derail conversations or throw 'trivia' in people's faces randomly at the bar to make myself look smart in front of people. Have a drink, talk about life like a normal person. Even my TA's and professor's don't do that shit when we hang out for drinks after class or whatever, and they're usually the smartest people in the room about their respective subjects, so maybe ask them about what they're working on instead for their academic proposals and theses in the case of the TAs who are finishing up their graduate studies. And if you don't understand what they're talking about, either ask them to explain or move on and research it on your own if you're interested. That way, any discussions on academic topics aren't completely unwarranted and you might actually learn something, or maybe you could contribute by giving your own opinion and ideas on the subject to start an actual discussion.

The one channel I do watch for pop-sci with decent explanations is Veritasium, who not only goes over all the theory on a specific subject and brings up cool examples, but he also cites all the papers & books he read on the subject in the description of his videos in the case you want to go over that as well. Same goes for PhilosophyTube, although he's more focused on philosophy and politics (pretty sure he worships Zizek like every other lefty, but hey, at least he's educated on his views.)

So that's my love/hate relationship with pop-sci. I enjoy the genre as an intro to a subject without doing a full mental workout by reading through a textbook, but I hate the social stirrups it causes when people think they're experts on the subject after they get a vague understanding on the subject. Like, seriously, don't do that shit lmao. But hey, if you're just reading as an intro to understanding a seemingly difficult topic, go for it. No need to be too pretentious about it though unless you actually plan on delving deeper into the subject.

So, if you know any cool books, give me pop-sci recs. Always looking for more cool stuff to read.

Right now, I'm reading Chaos, by James Gleick (revised 2008 edition) since Veritasium did a video on Chaos and the Mandelbrot Set recently and mentioned that book as his main intro to the subject as well. So far, it's been pretty good (not very far in, maybe 50 pages or so) but also focuses on the whole history of Chaos Theory, from Feigenbaum's research to all other approaches handled by other academics or just normal people like meteorologists who noticed how important the butterfly effect was on long-term forecasting (1 week+). My first intro to chaos was probably learning about the Chaos Game which would generate Sierpinski fractal patterns from pure RNG. This was because I was already interested in compsci to begin with, and this has lots to do with compsci and deterministic systems (which is exactly what computers are.)

I've also read some of Carl Sagan's work, most notably Cosmos because my grade 9 Science teacher (one of the nicest teachers I had) was a really big fan and would even go as far as playing Sagan's lectures in class because his explanations of the cosmos were so easily digestable. Didn't read that in grade 9, wasn't as avid of a student back then, but picked it up later on as I got more interested in astronomy and my dad bought me a telescope with a bunch of lens and filters so I could explore the night sky myself whenever the nights were clear and there wasn't too much light pollution (small town outskirts made this relatively easy.)

Of course I've also heard of the late Hawking's works, notably A Brief History of Time, although I haven't personally read it. I did watch a biopic about early Hawking's life (probably also grade 9 with the same teacher) but never got as far and interested in the subject as to actually pick up the book. It's somewhere on my list, though.

Honorable mention goes to Harari's Sapiens. Haven't read it, but maybe once a week I'll see someone on my usual bus ride to class reading it. Only gets the honorable mention because it seems more oriented towards social sciences rather than the more obscure and possibly esoteric Sciences like Math, Physics, Chemistry which more people tend to turn away from. But it certainly does seem to have gotten incredibly popular, so I might pick it up over the summer or something as a supplementary source to any academic papers I write for people (most of them fall into Social/Political sciences, with the occasional Literature paper, 'technical report,' or filler content for people's labs and assignments in which they can't really bullshit too much.)

  Condescending people...

I make every effort not to be. I know I ain't perfect. I sure I am at times, just like anyone else, but it truly is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Some people just have an inbred need to feel "better" than the people around them. They can't stand the idea of just being equals. Fighting that at work at the moment. A new person tryna be the straw boss and tell everyone else what to do. It's not flying too well with anyone except for my boss.

That being said, you can't escape these people. They'll be everywhere in some form or another.

How do you guys handle narcissistic people such as these?

  Underrated Games

No matter what generation if's from, there's bound to be game gems that aren't well known sometimes. So, why don't we talk about some of our favorite games that could've been way more popular than they were?

My personal favorite that comes to mind is a GBA game called Car Battler Joe. It was a game focused on a young man with a love of armored vehicle racing/battles, with a storyline focused on reuniting a family and helping others through quests. It was just a really fun racing/car battle game, but I really loved the storyline to be honest... That made it worth way more than I think it was treated as.

  Makestation Server
Posted by: Darth-Apple - February 20th, 2020 at 3:29 AM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (6)

If you've had trouble with MS being much slower than usual lately, you aren't the only one. I'm afraid Makestation has finally outgrown the server that has hosted it since 2013.

I won't get into any of the technical details, but in short, our host has been migrating VPSs off of the specific product we subscribe to for years. The end result is that, while Makestation is normally fine, when other nodes don't behave, we grind to a halt. They recently downgraded our hardware (or likely migrated us to a lower-specced node), which has made problems worse.

We will finally be upgrading our server sometime early in March. When that happens, MS will likely be down for most of the day. I will announce a date when the time comes closer, and will be paying for an upgrade to make sure that we are set for (hopefully) years to come!

With that said, depending on if I can find a good deal, I may need to put ads up on the community temporarily until the upgrade can pay for itself. I'm extremely cash-strapped at the moment (trying to finish my degree and it hurts), but keeping MS running smoothly is important. All in all, we'll be making the website faster over the coming weeks.

I'll be announcing more details as the time comes nearer!

  Escape Room Puzzle [ Help :( ]
Posted by: Lain - February 18th, 2020 at 7:13 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (7)

So over the Valentines Day weekend, my GF visited and we messed around for the three days from Saturday from Sunday. Saturday was spent in my tiny outskirts-of-town area (Canadian outskirts means 30min to 1hr drive outside of the immediate city), Sunday was spent in the big city (still small by American/European standards,) and the third day was spent at a board game cafe killing time until she had to catch her bus and go home.

Some backstory:
Before she came over, we were planning out how to organize all our 'dates,' like which general areas we would spend time in, try to put everything in similar areas together, and just in general find stuff to do. My town has almost nothing fun to offer and the 'big city' has a total of two clubs. Not that I club at all, but just to give you an idea of how boring this place is for anyone 18-25. After a while, she suggested an escape room and then I remembered an article I read a while back.

Code:
If you're unfamiliar with the concept of an escape room, here's a quick rundown.
You pay 20$ or whatever to get locked in a room for about an hour, and in that one hour, you and your friends/party have to solve a series of puzzles to get a key that will unlock the exit.

In some cases, if you have a small group, you may be matched with another small group to all join in together (usually a limit of 6 people) depending on how busy the night is, if you have reservations, etc.

If you escape, you can get your photo put up online, and in some cases you can win a small prize or at the very least a discount on booking a different escape room at the venue.

Turns out, there's an escape room in the city that's sponsored by our Communications Security Establishment (CSE.) The CSE is responsible for code-breaking, mostly, and is essentially the cryptography department of CSIS (Canadian CIA). If you beat this escape room, apparently you can possibly get an interview with the CSE because they're looking for people that can solve all sorts of logic puzzles.

So we booked that one.
And we beat it.
We were matched with another group of four (me + GF + 4 = 6 people) and because we did the room later at night, we got lucky and the group was also a little more mature than a 15yo's birthday party, so they also knew what they were doing and we synergized really well.
The room wasn't set for an hour, either, like they typically are. This one was set to 45min, and we still beat it with 5min to spare. Got our photo taken and put online so I have the proof that I completed it.

But no interview, like the rumours say.

Instead, if you beat it, you are given the option to solve another challenge within 30min (you can solve it alone or with the group) and if you can solve that challenge, then you're guaranteed an interview with the CSE. Allegedly only one person has been confirmed to get an interview through this method, so it's a pretty tough puzzle.

And since I didn't sign an NDA (the waiver for the escape room is just confirming that they're not responsible for injury if you decide to be an idiot) so I think it's safe for me to post the puzzle here. As follows:

USE THE BADGE OF HONOUR UNTIL GNOME KEYS FIRST READING

Your task is to find a ten letter Latin word hidden in this message.
Use it as a password to your host after the experience.

Now, of course we failed, and the host did not tell us what the answer was, but he was kind enough to at least let us know if we were on the right track.
So what I do know for sure is that there is a substitution cipher, and I believe it is fully rotationally dynamic.
Let me explain a few things and get to some things I've tried.

The Badge of Honour refers to the CSE logo, and particularly the crest, not the text beside it.
First Reading likely refers to the fact that only one iteration of the algorithm would be necessary to find the message, just to let people know not to waste their time doing all kinds of iterations.
Gnome Keys is what stumps me the most. When originally doing the puzzle, our group made the assumption that Gnome Keys was just an arbitrary phrase that meant nothing, but the more I think about it, the more I believe that it was another hint.

Only one person has officially solved this puzzle. They got their interview, but cannot confirm whether they got hired or not (top secret and whatnot.) You're only given 30min to solve this puzzle.
I've spent almost 20hrs probably, since the time I got back from the room, sleep, hung out with GF, went back home after she left to go back to her town, then worked on it until 2AM again, and this morning I took another crack at it.
I've been brute-forcing like crazy, doing every kind of Vigenere substitution, or arithmetic, using word lengths, playing with offsets, and my notebook is actually getting kinda full of this shit. Like I said, I've been at it for hours, and likely almost a day, and I haven't gotten far. If the puzzle was solved by one person in 30 minutes, that means that if they did what I did, they must have simply just gotten insanely lucky. And I doubt the Canadian CIA wants to base their applicants off the luck of the draw.

So, I think that Gnome Keys very likely refers to a specific type of cipher to use, not just a simple ROT1-25, or Vigenere, or Caesar shift, or anything like that.
I've tried endlessly googling for 'gnome cipher' or 'gk cipher' or 'gnome cryptography' and haven't found any specific ciphers to use, but came up across one result about the faithful and forgetful gnome model, but that's more related to hashing rather than a cipher, so I doubt that's relevant.

Now, onto the actual cryptography part:

The Clue/Message:
Code:
USE THE BADGE OF HONOUR UNTIL GNOME KEYS FIRST READING
Word Lengths: 3 3 5 2 6 5 5 4 5 7
Summed up: 45 (Also 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9)
We shall denote the set of word lengths as L (L[1] = 3, L[10]=7)

First letters: UTBOHUGKFR
Total: 10 letters
Likely the hidden message encrypted (looking for a ten-letter latin word)
We shall denote the set of first-letters as the set M (M[1] = U, M[10] = R)

The Crest/Badge:
Code:
NUNTIUM COMPARAT ET CUSTODIT
No spaces: NUNTIUMCOMPARATETCUSTODIT
Meaning: To Compare & Preserve the Message

Number of Letters: 25
We shall denote this set (no spaces) as K (K[1] = N, K[25] = T)

Other notes:
Code:
The instructions segment is irrelevant to the puzzle, according to the host. No need to waste time there.
Although Comparat is the top of the crest and where you would think to start, this is the assumption we made at the official puzzle, and turns out it was wrong, confirmed by host.
Because of the last note, I highly doubt that NUNTIUM...CUSTODIT must be reversed or used in reverse.

To make life easier, I've also made a couple lookup tables.
1 is the most likely, but I made an interesting result with 2.
They are both organized as the following:
Alphabet : Number : K[Number] : Alphabet[(Number(Alphabet) + Number(K[Number])) mod 26]

To explain that last column, take the first letter for instance in the message: M[1] = U
U is the 21st letter of the alphabet. Find the letter at the 21st position in set K, K[21] = T.
T is the 20th letter of the alphabet. Add 21 + 20 = 41.
41 mod 26 (41 % 26) = 15
The 15th letter in the alphabet is O
So the last column in position 21 is O

Lookup Table (1):
Code:
A 01 N O
B 02 U W
C 03 N Q
D 04 T X
E 05 I N
F 06 U A
G 07 M T
H 08 C K
I 09 O X
J 10 M W
K 11 P A
L 12 A M
M 13 R E
N 14 A O
O 15 T I
P 16 E U
Q 17 T K
R 18 C U
S 19 U N
T 20 S M
U 21 T O
V 22 O K
W 23 D A
X 24 I G
Y 25 T S
Z 26 - -

So let's try a few.
K[M[1-10]]:
Code:
U T B O H U G K F R
T S U T C T M P U C

Lookup[1] to Lookup[4]:
Code:
U T B O H U G K F R
O M W I K O T A A U
Note: No permutation of ROT1-25 made this a legible word.
Once I saw OMWI, I though maybe I would have found something, or maybe I made an error and it was actually OMNI (prefix for 'all') but no luck.

After trying all sorts of permutations similar to this one, and playing with the mod26 to mod25 or changing offsets, I tried two things.
First, the host mentioned something else about how it might be dynamically rotational. Instead of looking up each offset in the table starting from 0, I should perhaps start from the last offset. Observe.

Code:
First letter in set M is U. Offset 21.
Offset 21 in set K is T, letter 20.
21+20=41 mod 26 = 15, O
(Lookup column 4, O)
Second letter is T, Offset 20.
Start from last offset, 21, and add 20 (mod 25 [25 is length of set K]) = 41 % 25, 16
At offset 16, column 4 = U
[...]
Result:
O U U T I W K W K -

I tried a few variants on this idea, and still nothing worth noting. So, I modified my assumptions a little bit:
Code:
The set K has a length of 25 while the alphabet is length 26.
I operate under the assumption that A = 1, Z = 26 meaning that Z does not have a corresponding value. There is no Z in set M, so this assumption should be fine.
There is also no A in set M, therefore I can also align set K with the alphabet using the conversion of A=0 to Z = 25 (offset 1 down) without collision

Thus, I generate the following:
Lookup Table (2):
Code:
A 00 - -
B 01 N P
C 02 U X
D 03 N R
E 04 T Y
F 05 I O
G 06 U B
H 07 M U
I 08 C L
J 09 O Y
K 10 M X
L 11 P B
M 12 A N
N 13 R F
O 14 A P
P 15 T J
Q 16 E V
R 17 T L
S 18 C V
T 19 U O
U 20 S N
V 21 T P
W 22 O L
X 23 D B
Y 24 I H
Z 25 T T

Now, you can see that our first letter in set M is U, this isn't 21 anymore, it's 20. So everything gets offset by one, and as a result column 4 also changes by bumping everything up by an offset of 1 (O in lookup1 column 4 becomes P in lookup2 column 4, X becomes Y, A becomes B, K becomes L, etc.)
And using this table, I then perform the following:

K[M[1-10]]:
Code:
U T B O H U G K F R
S U N A M S U M I T

Well, it at least looks like a word, but not Latin. Maybe Hindi or something? Maybe I'm just being reminded of TunakTunak.
But flip it around, and what do you get?
Timusmanus
Or as two words, Timus Manus, which is in fact Latin
Meaning: Concentrated Hands

Unfortunately, although this worked and gave me some Latin, it gave me two words in those ten letters instead of one word, and Google Translate returns nothing for 'timusmanus' as one word, so I guess it's another defeat.

So yeah. It's still bothering me because I've solved tons of crypto challenges online before, and done all the RE and stuff, but this one problem with a basic cipher that you can solve with pen and paper is really screwing with me and making me feel stupid, so I'm pretty pissed off and I'm gonna keep swinging at it until it breaks.

Give me suggestions on where I should look, or maybe what other kinds of algos I should try.
I've done pretty much every possible algo that has to do with the lookup tables/mod26/mod25 in one iteration, and I've established that First Reading means one iteration, so I'm not going to go overboard.
If it's one iteration, that likely also means it's a symmetric cryptographic system so I shouldn't need to use multiple rounds.
Anything that would take longer than 30min to do by hand should not be considered, since that's the time limit they gave us in-person and we were not allowed to use computers, only a single sheet of paper and a pen.
