This section is in honor of a community that was an inspiration beyond words. It was so much more, and was the foundation for which we were built. Simmania is unfortunately no longer with us, but we've been growing this section as much as possible to try and pay our honors. It's a tribute to a community that will never be forgoten.

Anyway, it's clear that we have quite a few Cities:Skylines players here. We will add some boards for this section once it grows a little more (probably once it reaches 1K posts). We've already got it at the very top of the forum (along with our special city journals section), so we've done a lot to try to expand this. Many thanks to everyone who has made this possible! 

Anyway, we are open to all suggestions here. This section is a high priority, so we will work hard to grow it. In fact, in recent months, we've nearly doubled the content here (and it shows no signs of stopping).

DigitalOcean is a fairly large provider/host that offers virtual servers (virtual machines on a rack server) for good prices. You get much more resources and better scalability than you do on shared hosting. On shared hosting, once your website gets busy, they email you and ask you to upgrade, or they suspend you. On VPS hosting, you generally get much more resources allotted to you, and if you run out, you'll know exactly where the limit is and can upgrade long before that happens. 

It's generally much more flexible, powerful, and scalable. 

Anyway, I've always used Ramnode. They're awesome and have great prices and reliability, but they have some vague CPU usage policies that are a little limiting and intimidating. In short, using more than one core (even if you bought four) is considered "abuse" unless it's for short bursts. Nobody is really sure if a "burst" is one hour, or an evening. I've never once run into an issue with Ramnode, but as we grow, I'm a little concerned about how vague the policy is. 

DigitalOcean doesn't seem to do that, or at least is much more specific about it. I already have a new server for MS that is in the process of being set up (on Ramnode), but I saw some good ones on DigitalOcean and I've been considering it. Anyone have experience with them?

it's the final round of a battle of websites over at forum promotion and a forum called meowsepad is tied for first place.  Unfortunately some sour grapes are heckling both the community and the owner and their website/forum.  If anyone is a member there and has enough posts to participate I'd really appreciate it if you could vote for meowsepad.  They're a community much like our own and could use our help!

I just got mine. Much needed. I’m going to use it towards paying my final semester. A lot of folks in my generation aren’t getting a stimulus, but I’m lucky. I file my own taxes. Keeps me on the roll.

Hard times have hit me these past few months. The Coronavirus is looming for us all, and I'm a university student working as much as possible to make ends meet. To to help make the difference on monthly bills, I'm opening up my experience to all! I'll set up a server for you at a low-cost rate.

I have years of experience setting up servers on Nginx, MySQL, PHP, and Ubuntu. I have experience doing these both in for corporate and for personal use. I am well versed in Nginx rewrite rules, Apache based setups, MyBB-specific needs, and Wordpress-specific needs. In general, I have set up dozens of servers and can fine tune a server specifically for what you need.

I will also install the application of your choice (MyBB, phpBB, Wordpress, Drupal, etc), along with Filezilla access and phpmyadmin for easy database management. Your server will be completed with a ready-to-use application installed. Any specific requests can be discussed as well. 

Cost:
The cost to you will be $35 for the first server, and $20/server for every server thereafter.

So I've been playing CSL for some time now. I got a little tired of the cartoonish look of the default style, so I started using custom ones. The Brooklyn style is, by far, my favorite. I use it heavily for areas that are outside of my CBD/Downtown areas, but still inter-city enough to need an urban look.

Check this page on Steam for what these districts look like. I'd share my own, but they are cranked all the way down on the graphics settings, so the official screenshots are better. 

Anyway, it's all low-density which is the downside. High density won't grow in districts defined as brooklyn styles. But I find that this gives a lot of extra character to more urbanized parts of the city. 

See this collection for adding this one into your own cities. There are plenty of other great ones as well. Let us know what styles you prefer!

With the release of the Polymega I wanted to talk a bit about this concept and how cool it is.



see the polymega is a modular console that emulates other consoles, plug in a module and you can play genesis games, plug in another and you can play SNES games, or Turbographics 16, or whatever.

what's cool is that this isn't the first time this was tried.

I give you the Pioneer Laseractive.



It had a few different modules but how this differs from the polymega is interesting because it doesn't emulate consoles, unlike the polymega which is one device that emulates consoles with modular passthrough modules, the pioneer laseractive is a laserdisc player with an expansion bay that contains compact versions of consoles.

I know it's weird right?

here's the most interesting part though, it's not just console modules, it also has a computer interface module and a karaoke module.

2 different approaches to the same result, a device that can be multiple consoles in one unit.

I've been tinkering with this specific idea for a while but I've not come up with anything to show for it yet...

see what's special about the PAC-S10 (Genesis Module), is that it's actually 2 devices, it's a Sega genesis compressed down, and a secondary sega CD board which actually sends and receives the CD commands from the laseractive main unit, meaning it actually handles the CD commands through an external device.

this is not really possible for the average person but it's sort of like this...

see I'm thinking what would happen if you took a genesis board, and changed the outputs so that the power and RGB connector plug into an interface, the cartridge and two controller ports go to the front, and you re-route the sega CD expansion board so that you have a front loading SeGA cd setup beneath it as one compact device which plugs into the interface.

it'd be similar to how the laseractive works only without the external CD drive module.

at least that's my thinking on it.

if you take out the bottom bit it's the same as a Sega genesis + sega CD without the CD drive mechanism.

Theoretically you could take this a bit further though with the DIY concept.

if you were to place a programmable microcontroller between the sega CD bus and a different CD drive (similar to the raspberry pi/Atapi controller project), you could at least in theory translate the control commands from the sega CD into atapi compatible ones allowing you to use a standard IDE drive and send the data from it to the Sega CD's CD input.

this would make it possible to use multiple consoles on one CD/DVD drive like the laseractive.
repeat as necessary.

what you would end up with is something sorta bulky but unique, a multi-console with cartridge ports and controller ports for various consoles, a single CD/DVD drive (slot loading?), and a computer power supply with inverter/controller boards on the interfaces to ensure the right voltage get's to the various consoles.

crazy? yes, impossible? nope.

just one of the ideas I've been thinking about since I first learned about the polymega and later the laseractive.

probably not going to act on it until I'm way more skilled but the idea is there for anyone interested.

as a side note, since SD to CD drive adapters exist, this might be another way to add additional functionality for if you don't have or want an actual disk drive... just tossing that out there.
