 At the rate we're going its going to be English. I don't mind that, but I think English needs to change a bit. Too many exceptions. One that made me laugh:
GHOTI is can be pronounced FISH in English, using the pronunciation of the capitalized letters in the below words:
rouGH

The fact that Europe still has so many languages and dialects amazes me.  Call it a US problem. I can drive hundreds of miles and everyone still speaks English or Spanish.

I like speaking German though. Because it's an excellent way to respond when people think you don't speak Spanish and decide to make fun of el gringo. :p

@ Guardian you say that... but at least a third of english is derived from german, the other two thirds from a mix of french and saxon.

With a load of Latin and Greek thrown in as well (although, some of the Latin came via French  )

That's been tried a few times. One of my favorites is Esperanto which is a Latin based constructed language primarily intended for trade and as a universal language between cultures.
Ironically English has become the linga franca due to the large number of people speaking it in many parts of the world. It's often the second language of choice.

That'd be fun... I've always thought I would like to invent my own language, if I knew more about linguistics and I had more time on my hands!
