[Development] Asperger's Network

#37
Since our migration away from standard forum softwares, we have not used BBCode to markup our posts.

In the current version of the website, marking up posts is achieved using a syntax that isn't too hard to learn. We're migrating to our own in Asperger's Network 3.

In order to mark up a post, you'd use code like (*bold*) text, or (/italic/) text. You can (-strikethrough-) your posts, or even (_underline_) them.

Embedding an image is easy as pie-- or maybe ramen: # https://i.imgur.com/hyfzWe6.jpg

If you're not uploading an image you can even create a bulleted (or numbered) list:

* Just
* Like
* This

# or
# like
# this

It's all very similar to markdown, and I personally think it's so much easier than hacky BBCode.

So something to keep in mind, BB code is very similar to HTML and comes from an era when people were still writing their own websites.

it really isn't complicated once you learn it and is fairly straight forward often using the first letter for the most common used stuff like bold, italics, strikethrough, etc.

while tags like media, images, etc are just written out.

and everything always ends with the same only having a / in front of it. so [img] [/img] for example.

I do like how the bulleted or numbered list thing works though, but how does it work when creating multiple?

does it allow for you to do

# first
# second
# third
-----------------
# first
# second
# third

or does it just continue with the same list?

Fair comment, but building a parser is terrible.

So, good question:

Ideally, you'd break them up, so you'd have

# your
# first
# list

# your
# second
# list

All you need to do is make it a new 'paragraph' and it'll break itself up.

But you can

# do a
## second level list

If you want to go down that list.

Have you ever created or edited something on Wikipedia? Note how they don't have a live preview so you run the risk of royally breaking a wiki article?

Welll...

On our old website, our wiki was immensely obscure to use. We've fixed that with the addition of an autogenerate page with all our articles on it.

It's been a couple of months since I've posted an update here. Partly because I've been busy and partly because I got a little bit stuck.

No more. A few updates:

To start, our nav-bar has been updated. On the right hand side, there will be links to notifications (to be implemented), search (to be implemented, soon hopefully), and dark mode (which won't be initially available to users) - and you'll have Home, Forums, Wiki and Account as standard. Clicking your username will take you to your public profile, and you'll have an option on the side to update it. Editing account settings from any page is available by clicking account, not your username.

I've given our login page a bit of a spruce up with a nicer-looking form. Todo: Errors when you try to log in - rather than throwing 500s if something goes wrong. Tabs on the side, like the wiki, as a navigation device.

I don't want to take a screenshot of the entire forums index, as you've seen it before, but there have been a few adjustments to the forums; firstly, you'll see our new alert design; we've given it a bit of thought and we think they look pretty amazing. Secondly, the most-recent posts now display in the centre of the field - finally. They look a lot better!

That's about it for now.
