Midi playback on websites in 2019
Posted by: SpookyZalost - February 22nd, 2019 at 4:31 AM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (2)

Greetings, I know this is a bit dated but has anyone tried using midi files as background music like in the old days?

I discovered to my frustration that most browsers don't natively support it anymore with most midi files downloading to my pc and I have to manually open them in my midi playback system.

luckily I recently discovered this bit of Javascript!

https://github.com/rism-ch/midi-player

what's nice about it is that you can load custom soundfonts into it.

now if you recall my previous midi thread you know that soundfonts are basically audio templates for the instruments which midi uses to play music.

so you can totally use midi playback in a way more advanced form than back in the day, and with the right soundfound and a really good midi file, it sounds really really awesome!

anyway just wanted to put that out there, that it's still possible here in 2019 with the only caveat being apple's IOS and Safari web-browsers not natively supporting certain plugins.

  Link buttons, why 88x31 px?
Posted by: SpookyZalost - February 22nd, 2019 at 3:23 AM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (23)

So I know this is an odd topic that's probably not really discussed anymore but at one point everyone linked their pages to everybody else, long before google, firefox, etc were a thing, way back in the ages of netscape, all the way up to the mid to late 00's.

in some places this culture still exists but way back then those links were typically done via buttons, usually designed by the owner of the site you wanted to link to.

see as it turns out back during the Geocities era everybody had their buttons be a standardized size but nobody could agree on who really started it, however a source from the time states that this trend started with Netscape!

yes that netscape, Microsofts original target for IE and bringer of many legal cases against them.

see netscape back in the day had their "Netscape now!" buttons which were greyscale links that advertised netscape and were very popular among users in the early internet.

so popular people stuck to the form factor for nearly 20 years as a standard!

here's an example of a blank template that was commonly used.

what was popular was to customize that template but always the image would be 88x31 px.  this standard allowed for neat rows and columns for links to other people's pages.

so what are your thoughts, is anyone here old enough to remember back when this was still a thing?

Wow, haven't been here in awhile.  Forum looks good!  I'm a 40 something internet junkie and tech guru.   I love playing MMOs and racing games.  Life is bliss.

Neocities, the home for a post geocities personal web zone.
Posted by: SpookyZalost - February 22nd, 2019 at 2:55 AM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (3)

Anyone here heard of neocities?

I run my own personal site off there but it's great because like geocities before it they have a nice community aspect with web rings, link banners, button pages, etc to create a nice close nit community with everyone having their own personal websites for whatever they want.

https://neocities.org/

I highly recommend poking around, it's kinda neat to see a living example of an evolution of cyberspace that I thought had faded after the end of myspace and the idea of personal domains and webpages.

  Favorite Website Plugins

I personally really like pure HTML and CSS but I know there's all sorts of plugins and addons that do some really awesome stuff, like have specialized forum applications for example.

what are some of your favorites and why?

Hello everyone,

Ash here. I am from London, United Kingdom. In my spare time I like to just browse different forums, manage my own site, play games or catch up on my favourite TV shows. At the moment, I'm watching Arrested Development, having found out about it recently.

Hope to have a good time here Smile

  Any surfers here?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - February 16th, 2019 at 4:28 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

I bought my surfboard and my wetsuit a little while ago, and finally took it out this afternoon, with a buddy of mine. Mind you, yes I'm on the east coast in NC, but it's February, and the water is about 50 degrees. The wetsuit keeps you warm, or at least it's supposed to. I ordered a very cheap one off of some website, and it looks great, but trust me, it's definitely not the best wetsuit in the world. A lot of cold water got in and I had quite a bit of trouble staying warm.

Got fairly comfortable hanging on to a board in the water, was out for about an hour and a half, and then I got too cold to continue on. My hands were dark purple and I was shivering profusely. I had lost most of my coordination and had some trouble swimming to shore. Looks like I'm either getting a better wetsuit, or waiting until March when the water warms up a little more. Or maybe just not staying in the water for an hour and a half, I think my body can stay warm for at least 30 minutes... :Finna

Anyone else here Surf or have any tips? I live in a beach town, it's kinda a rite of passage around here, but this is much harder than it looks. Considerably so as well. Tongue

Anti CSRF code is missing in most of the login form of every theme.
Somehow managed to login, but this should be fixed.

Also, z-index of modal is wrong and misplaced.
