  ChatGPT
Posted by: Darth-Apple - December 24th, 2022 at 3:44 AM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (2)

I tried ChatGPT recently, and I'm quite impressed with how smart it is.

I wouldn't have expected AI to catch onto what I was doing, but evidently it understood that this was a completely baseless claim that I was attempting to prove. Wanted to see if it would catch on to it (something that would clearly fail the "common sense test" for a human, but AI evidently has learned to apply common sense too.)

Not only did it write a program correctly, but it managed to explain it too!

ChatGPT has been more impressive than I expected it to be. The fact that it can write code AND comprehend (in English) what it's writing is incredible, and I have a feeling AI technology will get even smarter than this in the coming years. It's almost eerie how advanced artificial intelligence has become.

Worst looking forums from internet history
Posted by: Darth-Apple - December 24th, 2022 at 3:33 AM - Forum: Web Design & Internet - Replies (10)

I was looking through lists of bad web designs recently, and I came across something on the Web Archive that pretty much puts everything else to shame. This web design is probably one of the worst web designs I've ever seen: https://web.archive.org/web/200606240738...forum.com/

It was from 2006, so I suppose the standards were a little lower back then. But what's shocking is that this forum still exists today, even though it looks quite different (still not great, but better than it did). And I mean, if it worked for them, you can't argue with results I suppose. It might have looked absolutely terrible, but their website still exists 16 years later. Tongue

What are the worst, most cringeworthy web designs you've ever seen? (Don't be hyper-critical of good-faith efforts of course. We're looking for hall-of-fame cringe, things that people couldn't have possibly made without intentionally making them look bad. Tongue)

Sad I've now said goodbye to the biker scene entirely.
Posted by: tc4me - December 23rd, 2022 at 9:23 PM - Forum: Lifestyle - No Replies

Hey guys, I've now said goodbye to the biker scene entirely.
For personal reasons, I rarely get to drive, and when I do, I don't have a clear head.
My severely autistic 7-year-old son Ben can't handle it when I'm on my bike. And my son just goes first, unfortunately he only accepts me as a reference person. My heart is bleeding a little, it was a great bike. The way it looks now, I will never drive again, until now I'm 57 and you can't say how my son will develop. Autism is not just a cough and runny nose that disappears again, and unfortunately it has a very pronounced type, A-typical hyperautistic (autism spectrum)
I don't blame my son, he didn't choose autism, and I want to give him the time and help him find his way in this world of norm neuros.
I offered my 1 year old BMW S1000RR for sale and sold it immediately, picked it up and gone ;-(

I still have my Audi S6, which already has 860 hp, and instead of the BMW RR I bought a Mercedes SUV ML 63 AMG today, .. as a Christmas present, I will only get it in a week, the car is needed, will still prepared and serviced

  The Unrealistic Ideas Thread
Posted by: Darth-Apple - December 23rd, 2022 at 7:25 PM - Forum: Launchpad - Replies (2)

Figured that for the more visionary/brainstorming types, many of us will have probably come up with more than a few ideas that weren't quite realistic. Dreams we hope will come true, but that aren't quite possible with today's technology. Goals that are lofty but that we've failed at before, and the list goes on.

It's not always depressing to think about these ideas, even if they aren't entirely feasible. Science fiction is a big genre! Figured I'd create a thread for all of the lofty visionary ideas that folks have had that didn't quite prove to be as feasible (yet) as hoped.

I'll start: I wanted to create a replacement for lithium ion battery technology in EVs. Quickly realized I wasn't nearly well versed enough in chemistry to make that happen (if even the smartest people in the world are scratching their heads, I certainly wont be the one to figure it out Tongue)

  Cities Skylines Financial Districts DLC
Posted by: Darth-Apple - December 23rd, 2022 at 6:56 PM - Forum: Simmania - Replies (4)

Cities Skylines has brought insider trading (literally) to the game as a part of the Financial Districts DLC. You can buy or sell stocks depending on how things are going in your city, and you can benefit (or lose money) depending on how their respective industries perform.

The idea seems interesting to me, but I'd feel too weird about doing literal insider trading on my cities. Tongue The extra districts with new buildings would probably be nice though, Cities Skylines sometimes feels a little bland with the base game's buildings.

What are your thoughts on some of the DLCs? Do you own any, and if so, which ones?

Do you put stickers on your laptop?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - December 23rd, 2022 at 6:39 PM - Forum: Lifestyle - Replies (2)

I throw stickers on pretty much anything I own. It seems like a no-brainer to do it for laptops too (you can put a bit of your personality into it and make it your own, which I've always enjoyed. I usually get a case for them so that I can keep them after I get rid of the laptop too, although I usually keep my computers for quite a long time before replacing them.)

Among some folks in the Mac community, it's a lot more controversial. Sticker's don't seem that damaging to me (devices are meant to be used anyway, nothing stays new forever), but it's something that's a surprisingly hot topic in many of these circles.

Do you put stickers on your personalized devices? Why or why not?

[Poll] How should we handle the entourage of email subscriptions?
Posted by: Darth-Apple - December 23rd, 2022 at 8:48 AM - Forum: Community Related - Replies (3)

Hello MS Community,

Our new server seems to be sending emails much better than our older one, and that's a bit of an achilles heel. MyBB (our forum software, as many of you already know) is quite excessive with subscription emails out of the box, and literally auto subscribes users to every thread they've ever replied to. This means you'll get an email for every reply that someone makes to a thread you've also posted in (unless you manually uncheck the subscription box when you post).

That's a lot of emails. Particularly for users who are pretty active.

We're looking into ways to help clean up this behavior (currently you can still enable/disable these emails in the User CP, which won't change), but some of the options might involve unsubscribing all users to all current threads and requiring manual action to subscribe to future threads. We can do this (and it would clean up everyone's email quickly), but I don't necessarily want to get rid of existing subscriptions if there are people who are making use of them either.

We wanted to create a poll to get community input and to allow MS users to help us decide. (Keep in mind that our forum software is pretty archaic, it unfortunately doesn't have any sort of daily digest feature for these things. That would probably be the ideal solution, but we're looking into alternatives due to the difficulty of implementing this.)

Feel free to also comment any additional ideas below as well!
