If we're talking dogs, cats, etc, I'm of the opinion that these should all be indoor animals. Cats of course will roam around and will sometimes wander off, but they usually come back by the evening anyway.
Horses and other such animals are a little harder to just keep inside. Never had horses and I've never had any friends who owned them, so I don't know quite as much about how they keep them comfortable at night.

I suppose it depends on where you live. I am in California so we can get away with leaving our dogs / cats outside and they'll be fine year round. There are a few days in the winter when it does get pretty chilly so you'd have to let them sleep inside then.

We usually just bring the dogs in at night here... mostly because there's bears, mountain lions, coyotes, etc running around.
