I've seen several other general discussion forums that have had protected mature discussion sections available. Of course, these boards must be joined manually and have age requirements, so the discussions aren't public. I've considered adding one here for a while to allow members to have mature discussions outside of the public eye, but I suppose the best way to find out if there is demand for it is through none other than a community poll. Tongue

The section obviously wouldn't be for inappropriate or graphic content, but more for discussions on adult related topics. My involvement would probably be fairly limited. What are your thoughts? Is this something that should be added to the forum?

Be sure to vote in the poll!
Honestly, I would be indifferent Smile just make sure that if you do, you have enough members that are old enough.
I'd probably make it a 16+ only section. For true 18+ discussions, we aren't the place since I don't exactly feel like moderating graphic, inappropriate content. There are some people who would enjoy that sort of thing, but I'm not really one of them. Tongue

Thanks for the response.
Yeah Smile don't want this site turning into some pornographic discussion site.
Maybe, as long as it's 16+ only.
I say maybe. Maybe, because just... maybe. I have no reason to say no, but then again I'm a pervert. Tongue
And we wouldn't want that, now would we Tongue.

How exactly does ONE single section turn a whole site into a pornographic site?

If Darth added a sports section, would that turn MakeStation into a sports community?
Honestly, my views about the topic are mixed, for several reasons. On one hand, I don't want makestation turning into a community that feels restricted or overly controlled. There are communities out there that are like that. I'm not going to go out there and say that Makestation is some ultra-unique revolutionary one of a kind forum, because it obviously isn't. However, ever since the beginning of this forum, creating a relaxed, small community atmosphere has been a priority, and will remain a priority.

At the same time, I've seen communities become so relaxed that things get out of hand. The good news is that we're a community of about 7,000 posts, so we don't exactly deal with the "big board" problems that many larger forums deal with. However, with any forum where mature discussions are allowed, there has to be some measure where standards are clearly laid out. I feel that the entire purpose of having a mature discussions section of the forum is to allow those discussions to exist without "polluting" the rest of the forum for those who don't want to participate, so it's a balance in a lot of ways, and is hopefully a balance that serves everyone as well as possible.

Of course, just to clarify, since this is probably something that is a bit ambiguous, we aren't talking about allowing the sharing of pornography or anything like that. Makestation will never be a place for such discussions. However, for discussions on topics that might not necessarily be inappropriate as much as they might not be PG-13 friendly, I'm certainly not opposed to adding a section. The purpose of this thread is to get a general community consensus as to whether there is demand for a section of that sort, since nobody really likes looking a forum full of unused boards. Tongue

Pornography is like spam. If discussion regarding that occurs here, that opens up many doors to spambots and spammers. Soon, all of the site's discussion boards would be flooded with pornographic posts and images.
I'll be sure to steer clear, if it ever happens.

That is not true at all. I have had an adult section on one of my forums for over 5 months, and no spambots or spammers have ever posted anything anywhere in my community. I know (and I have been a member of) at least 5 communities that have adult sections and never had any issues with spammers.

I am not saying that Makestation should have an adult section. It's not really my business what Darth Apple wants to have on his forum. But I am arguing the false preconceptions that adult sections are a bad thing.

That's not true. I was on a fairly large site (before the owner stopped paying the bills) that had swarms of spambots posting porn even though there wasn't a trace of porn from users on the site, and then there's been the opposite.
I'm not implying that Blake shouldn't put an adult section on his site Smile I'm just making my opinion. I've seen numerous forums get invaded just because an adult section was opened up. Spammers consistently posted pornographic content on these sites and ruined them.

However, it is apparent that I have no idea what I'm talking about. It's your site, Blake Smile your decision.
Who is Blake?
