Full Version: Anyone else think 16GB of disc space is a bit much for Windows 8

The more recent version of Windows have required large amounts of storage space. It is currently 16GB for the latest version of Windows. Linux, by comparison, will usually run very well on 4GB, at least for most distributions.

Does anyone else think 16GB is a bit much for a clean install?
It's simply way too much, period. What happened to the days when Windows came on 5 1/4 inch floppy disks and installed in less than 1gb? Tongue
I'm afraid to know what's next, honestly. Soon enough we'll be seeing "8GB RAM, 60GB disc..." on the requirements box.

Of course we'll probably have new features to look forward to as well, but seriously, I think there comes a point where enough is enough Tongue
I don't have any idea, actually I am a student of law and do not deals with this kind of stuff.
Yeah. It's a lot. I only found out about the space when I heard that Microsoft's Surface tablet consumes around 16GB of storage space. It comes with 32GB out of the box, so that's half of your storage gone. If I remember correctly, a lawyer even sued Microsoft because of this, in the name of false advertising. I'm not sure who won or lost, but I'm sure Microsoft got away with it because it's known that the OS will consume a certain percentage of a device's storage space (for example, the iPad's iOS consumes around 6-8GB of storage space).

I never really looked at how much disk space Windows XP and Windows 7 consumed. I always purchase computers with over 300GB of storage space. The laptop that I'm currently using has around 600-700 GB of storage space, so I think I'm safe if I ever need to upgrade to Windows 8. However, I most likely will not upgrade because my laptop does not have a touchscreen and that good ol' "START" button is my best friend, lol.

I honestly do not think it'll cross 60 GB anything soon. I think Windows 8 Pro consumes about 20GB. Again, I'm not sure. I discovered the number from a quick Google search, so don't blame me, xD
Well when most modern games take up over a GB of disk space, the OS is bound to take up more.
And seeing as iOS take 6-8GB, I'm not surprised by how much space W8 takes up.
I hope Windows comes out with a release that isn't quite so disk intensive. That isn't likely to happen, unfortunately. They'd have to take the kernel and keep that, then code everything else from scratch. Tongue
It isn't even as if it has made Windows so wonderful. It is certainly not that intuitive to use - I know lots of people are reluctant to have anything new but a friend was really grumbling about it today.
Link... some modern games take up well over 10GB of disk space. I find it ridiculous, but to be honest I think it's more reasonable for a game to use that much space than an OS. Linux can pull it off at 500MB or lower for very bare-bones distributions such as arch....
Then again, with the bare bones distributions you also have to install a lot of stuff to really get the usability of your computer. I usually prefer installing extra software than having to uninstall unneeded software, however.

I think 5GB for an OS is the max that should be needed.

Android takes up a good chunk of space too.
I'm not sure if it consumes as much as iOS, but Android 4.2.2 consumes a good amount of the 16GB of storage from my Nexus 7 tablet.

It doesn't bug me when I'm installing the operating system on a desktop or laptop because I normally purchase those bad boys with a lot of storage space (plus it's possible to upgrade, unlike with average Joe and a tablet). If the Windows 8 tablets have microSD card slots, then I'd be fine. I think filling up the internal memory will slow it down, so that's not something I'd recommend.

Yeah. A lot of PC games consume a lot of storage. Skyrim takes up 6GB of storage according to Steam. It's a large game and I don't mind keeping it on my PC. Then again, I have over 400 GBs so it doesn't really matter. However, full virus scans are a pain, lol (can you say "long wait" again?)
well, I've modded the crap out of Skyrim so it takes up much more for me. I've seen, and played games that will consume nearly 15GB of storage, so Skyrim is nothing compared to that.
15GB is about three DVDs worth of content. Talk about a large footprint...
Yeah, games today are huge. TF2, for example, is more than 7GB. That's all of the weapons/items/hats they have added in the last 5 years and 300+ patches.
300+ patches... woah that is a lot of patches.
ugh windows is still too bloated even though windows 10 uses only 8gb min now.
